Mr. Seiji Maehara, Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, came to FPCJ to hold an emergency press conference for foreign journalists on the day when Japan Airlines (JAL) filed for bankruptcy protection. A total of 42 journalists from foreign and domestic media attended the press conference.

Mr. Maehara announced that JAL had filed a petition for protection under the Corporate Rehabilitation Law and that it had made a formal application for support from the Enterprise Turnaround Initiative Corporation (ETIC). He then affirmed that the Japanese government would give necessary support for JAL until the completion of its rehabilitation. Mr. Maehara also stressed that during the restructuring process, the airline would continue its business operations including flight operations as usual.

In the Q&A session, foreign journalists brought up various issues including JAL's possible partnership with a US airline carrier, the effect on the Chinese market if JAL cuts its international services, and the total amount of public money required for JAL's rehabilitation.
