Στον δικό του κόσμο, το αναπάντεχο αυτό γεγονός σημαδεύει καταλυτικά τη ζωή του. Ο μικρός Ηλίας ούτε μπορεί, ούτε θέλει να δεχθεί την πραγματικότητα του θανάτου και προσπαθεί να κρατήσει τον πατέρα του ζωντανό, με δικούς του, μάλλον ανορθόδοξους τρόπους! Και πάνω από όλα, είναι απόλυτα σίγουρος, ότι ο πατέρας του θα γυρίσει, όπως του υποσχέθηκε, για να παρακολουθήσουν μαζί στην τηλεόραση τους Αμερικανούς να προσγειώνονται, για πρώτη φορά, στο φεγγάρι!

The story of a boy, Elias, who makes a pact with his father to watch the moonlanding on television. The year is 1969. The pair loves to recite the stories of Jules Verne, the man who had envisioned the "shot to the moon" a century earlier. Elias and his dad are adventurers and explorers. They spin tales of the imagination that take them far away from their home in Athens -- to their imagined refuges on islands and in space. They name the blue family car "Birbilo" and turn it into their own spaceship. Elias worships his father. But his father is often away on business trips, and one day, he doesn't come back. The nighttime promise will go unkept. And Elias must rely on their shared love of storytelling and the imagination to transcend the unimaginable.

In May 1969, ten-year old Elias (Giorgos Karayannis) is obsessed with the possibility of man landing on the moon and dreams up outrageous fantasy lives. When his father dies unexpectedly, he creates an elaborate fantasy that allows the father to stay alive in the boy's mind. His older brother and his mother have their own techniques for dealing with the tragedy. Hard Goodbyes: My Father was screened at the Locarno Film Festival, where Karayannis was awarded the Best Actor citation.
