  • Great example, but I think it shows that npage would have talked himself out of relativity, rather than Newton's theory. If the only explanation for the wobbles (sorry, didn't catch proper term!), in Mercury's orbit, that, in the framework of Newton's theory was compossible with all other observations, was the existence of another planet, then, the fact that no other planet was found should have been ignored, according to his argument. No other explanation was known to be compossible.

  • Agreed, because relativity is definitely not "compossible" but it is also true

  • What if I were do demonstrate that all non-evolutionary scientific theories have been shown to be compossible?

It seems like your whole video is predicated on them *not* being shown compossible.

Remember in my video where I explained how *all* good scientific theories contain explanations that have been shown to be compossible? The theories of gravity are some of them.

I just thought I'd ask you this before making a video response... so I could get your ideas straight.

  • But your video also doesn't address the fact that all good scientific theories can be shown to be "incompossible" as well. Not everything will yield to our intuition. This idea of compossibility is extremely similar to intuition, which has shown to be utterly false in the eyes of modern physics. Take the electron, quantum mechanically it can be in two places at one, THAT IS NOT COMPOSSIBLE, but it is correct nevertheless.

  • 2:54 -3:06 Anthony you seem to have got confused here. You are making npages point here not weakening it. The orbit of mercury was not compossible with the Newton's Theory so one (either The Theory or the orbit of Mercury) had to go! And the theory has to give way to the fact or facts. No matter how prevelent, entrenched or cherished.

  • But, he wants to throw out an entire scientific theory because of one imcompossibility. Newton theory was correct in almost every aspect, but it needed modification. If you look at predictions made by GE or Newton, for all intents and purposed they are identical. Say at that point that there was no reason to believe that newtons theory was correct wouldn't have been irrational, but it was correct about so many other things.

  • Excellent illustration of why napages argument fails! But then I'm not surprised to see him go thru such an attempt, when his efforts are meant to have one conclusion, and that is that Evolution isn't true! I mean, we see this kind of thing all the time by anti-Evolutionists. Fact is, these people are never honest.

Bottom line is that your example and explanation demonstrated the flaw in his argument pretty clearly.

  • I liked this video. The scientific method is like evolution by itself. What's right with our understanding is kept, and we keep refining ideas so they're better suited to describe reality.

Npage would throw out the theory of evolution based on a tiny discrepancy; if he were to be consistent, he'd also have to throw out everything we know, since every field has something that they can't explain just yet.

The guy is seriously comical in how selective he is at applying his "logic".

  • Does citrus eating E. Coli count? That was specifically created by placing E. Coli in an environment that contained citrus. Over a period of 20 years the E. Coli evolved into a form that could digest the citrus. E. Coli normally can not digest citrus in an oxygenated environment.

  • Define "biological philosophy".

  • Evolution is never been in the paradox realm of science, it only becomes intangible when creationist and other religious nuts can't fit the concept in with their faith... I say evolution can be very wrong. In science, there is room for refutation, but no one else has presented another plausible argument to counter effectively. Most other theory hold no water and can not explain or fit into other biological philosophies as well as Evolution has done and most likely continue till shown otherwise.

  • But we are in a realm of science, there is always uncertainty, especially in quantum physics... but we are not talking about quantum physics this is evolution, we can readily observe and test out predictions over time, I feel like a lot of people on this page are out of touch with the scientific method, something most 4th graders grasp.

  • considering that we know that peacocks are not naturally white, and they are only known white because a mutation that cause albinism, we can hypothesize that the normal colored peacock would have been more desirable considering also the ecological niche that animal lived in... If you want to see real viable evidence for natural selection, look at the peppered moth study conducted in England, it clearly shows a better case of melanism then just albinism.

  • I like your explanation better than my "pot smoking WTF theory" explanation. lol

  • (cont. from above)

That's the reason why scientists are trying to come up with a Unified Theory... so that they can do away with the paradox... since they obviously know that the paradox is not the right way to describe what's going on. The paradox is only the most convenient way to explain the *puzzle* that scientists are left with.
