Alan Ladd simply didn't know what a hunk he really was - height doesn't make the man. He was truly great and deserved an Oscar for SHANE.

How tall he was? Could anyone tell me?

When I was a stupid toddler I mistook Alan for the "tin man" from Wizard of Oz, Jack Haley. "This Gun for Hire" turned me into an Alan Ladd fan and "Shane" sealed the deal. Long live Alan Ladd!

What a pity Alan Ladd couldn't be happier with his own existance, he brought a lot of entertainment to millions of people. Shane was one of highlights of my elementary school years and I still watch that movie when I can find it.

@rajah2rajah He committed suicide at age 50 in 1964.

How old is Alan Ladd now? I watched Shane when I was a teenager in Sinagpore...almost 50 years ago, Just watch again in Cambodia. Great Movie & memory of my youth. and reminds me how time flew

I think he was one of those rare actors with great presence even though he was of small stature and though his acting style was subtle and somewhat subdued. Even his speaking voice, though rather monotone, was somehow so mesmerizing. In a movie like Shane he was at once quite handsome, masculine and of course tough, yet at the same time intuitive and even a little sensitive There was only one Cagney, or E.G. Robinson, or Bogie, and really only one Alan Ladd. IMO he was a great actor.
