For those wanting to try this style, it looks like it starts out with a loose french braid coming down the back, but instead of incorporating the pieces altogether to grow the braid like normal, he kept the ends popping out once they were used and just used a new section to continue the braid. Seems that then these loose ends were wound back up in almost a second braid pattern using those pins like we see during this clip. Essentially a braid on top of a braid, at least that's my guess!
