Because he was afraid the Germans and Japanese were working on one and would develop it first.
Picture the world if that had happened.
Anyway, Einstein only signed a letter that Leo Szilard gave to him, the concept of a fission weapon wasn't his idea and he had nothing to do with developing it, he wasn't even invited to participate in the Manhattan Project. Fission wasn't his field. It's a total misconception that Einstein had anything to do with making the bomb.

I think the atomic bomb is what make the politicians today think twice before start a world war, maybe without the atomic bomb now we would be in the 3rd world war...
