Nasri began playing in the French Ligue 1 with Marseille in the 2004/2005 season. He started 13 games and came on as a substitute in 11 games, scoring a total of just one goal, still an accomplishment seeing as he was only 17-years-old at the time. The next year his goal count improved scoring two goals in all competitions. But this season he got experience in both the UEFA Cup (10 games; no goals) and the UEFA Intertoto Cup (one game; one goal). Also during this past season, he played two games in each the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Intertoto Cup, scoring no goals.

On May 20, 2007, Samir Nasri was named French Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year[1][2] ahead of Jimmy Briand, Karim Benzema and Dimitri Payet.

Recently, Real Madrid was touted as a possible destination for Nasri, who was described as a perfect replacement for Zinedine Zidane who retired after the 2006 season.[3]. However, Nasri rebuffed any transfer rumours when he publicly committed himself to l'Olympique Marseille, stating "It would be madness on my part to leave. I still have to prove myself in Ligue 1".

Nasri as well was voted Marseille's player of the year by the fans. He received 62% of the votes.

In mid September Nasri was hospitalised after suffering from a virus. OM.netreported that he was expected to be discharged by the end of the month but it is not clear when he will resume training.
