  • Don't accept the label "autistic" unless you know for certain that's what he is. My child hasn't even entered kindergarten yet and he has the mind of a 15 year old. We thought that because he knew so much that he had to be autistic. They told us that he was a genius and that he was too social to be autistic. Your son seems rather social as well. I'm not a doctor but I wouldn't accept the diagnosis just yet.

  • I believe he is autistic because I am and so is my first cousin, as was my maternal grandfather. We all have Asperger Syndrome. Also, autism is called a spectrum disorder from severally autistic non-verbal children to extremely intelligent, high-functioning children, with most kids falling somewhere in between. There is such a thing as a little autistic.

  • I was wondering who diagnosed your son as autistic? The reason I'm asking that question is because my own son was doing the same thing with the same cards at three years old. He hasn't even entered kindergarten yet and can read at a third grade level, can read, can write not only in print but in cursive (which he told me was obsolete), can name all U.S. presidents in order, can identify them by their faces, knows all the states and countries on the map, among many other things. ...

  • Where I live in Canada, there is a group called DSAC, which stands for Developmental Services Access Centre which observed Ryan at the request of his daycare that had some concerns. They diagnosed him as Asperger. I would say to you these behaviours in and of themselves doesn't necessarily mean autism, there are many factors to consider. If you are really worried, take him to see someone and educate yourself on autism. I say worry when there is a reason to worry until then enjoy him.

  • God Bless His Heart.

  • thank you

  • MY son at 3 had 'hyperlexia' He was diagnosed ASD at age 5, but using age 7 tests as he was so far advanced!!

  • @yummymummy071902

I found very interesting information in this book: Misdiagnosis and DUAL diagnosis of gifted children and adults. by James T. Webb, Edward R. Amend, Nadia E. Webb, Jean Goerss, Paul Beljan, F. Richard Olenchak.

  • What age did he start to read?

  • He certainly doesn't defeat any stereotypes (hanging out in the undies). ADHD has similarities with ASD's but and frequently, a child that hasn't be diagnosed improperly with an ASD gets diagnosed with ADHD and depression. The indicative behaviors may be the same but the etiology and interventions differ to some degree

  • aw he has such a cute voice!
