Hello to all my friends!! It's snowing like mad on a Sunday afternoon up here in the Boston area, so I thought-"Why not make a video today?", Well..here you go: My beautifully restored 1954 RCA Victor 45-HY-4 "Deluxe" 45rpm record player. With a killer 4-tube push-pull amp and 8-inch cone, this beauty sounds fantastic, and is, by far, theeee best sounding 45 player of its time.

Even my restored 45EY4 (which also, by the way, sounds fabulous-check out the video), can't match the tonal quality of this beauty. The highs and lows are amazing! And look at that retro TV screen styling!!

Mind you, this beast was on 1/4 volume when the vid was shot, and if you have good PC speakers with a subwoofer, you can appreciate that thundering bass!!
Enjoy!! :)

  • I am impressed. This player kicks butt.

  • @thelazycomic Thanks! For a small-size, it can get quite loud :)

  • Sounds like Carnegie Hall.

Her flip cartridge, is it the Astatic 89t. Please let us know. Otherwise, we'll be wandering in the wilderness. Going from cartridge to cartridge. Our mouths will be dry are ears will...please, please, help us to the Promised Land.

Thank you for sharing and introducing us to these cool players.

God Bless you and God Bless America!

  • Sorry to let you down, but it is not an 89t, but just your standard stereo cartridge with flipover needle. The cartridge was wired to mono.

The good new is that these cartridges are widely available on eBay.

  • I see now. When you mentioned "Flip-tab", I assumed it was the BSR type.

  • These are found in the combination record player/radio/recordable CD units

  • Is that the same one used in the BSR mini-changers?

  • Please let us know the make and model of the cartridge.

    Thank you.

  • Hi Jack,

Thanks for the comment! This cartridge is actually your generic, black stereo cartridge, which I bridged to mono in addition to cutting the flip-tab off the needle so that it doesn't show.

I'm very familiar with the Chuo-Denshi cartridges, and have a few of the "low rider" ones in my other RCA players. They are great sounding, thanks to eBay and Williebosco, who sells them :)

  • Nice job on the RCA 45HY4! I too use the Chuo Denshi (CZ-680) on all of my RCA RP 190 machines. What a great sound considering the technology, power budget, speaker efficiency. Good stuff.

    Jack
