Great video. Dr Morgan puts his ideas across very clearly. Sadly, it won't make one iota of difference to how often the 2nd law is misquoted because we are dealing with people who aren't interested in finding the truth - they think they already know what it is, and reality will not stand in the way.

@Aerosteon He is not saying "the surroundings of the universe". He is saying the universe is the system + surroundings. If he were to say the universe is the surroundings and the system it probably would be less confusing. You answer your own question though with your second statement.

I'm confused by his statement about "the surroundings of the universe". The universes encompasses everything in existence; it has no surroundings.
The universe is itself increasing to complete entropy (heat death of the universe), but in the time between the beginning and the end there is no shortage of undistributed energy, which gives the input of energy complex structures need to form.

"Since the vast system of the hypothetically evolving biosphere as a space-time continuum seems to lack both a program and a mechanism, it is clearly precluded by the Second Law"
Holy crap that is funny if you can understand what is being said there. :D
Just a general hint, when you hear someone using the phrase space-time continuum to proove a point, be very very sceptical, that is often the sign of a mouthful of bs on it´s way. Just throwing the word into a sentence doesn´t mean anything.

The 'surroundings' are the rest of the universe, minus the system.
Let's say you are examining a beaker of hydrochloric acid. This beaker, and it's contents, would be the 'system'. The 'surroundings' is the whole Universe outside that beaker.
The result of the equation has to increase disorder in the Universe.

What are the surrounding he's talking about when he says "system + surroundings" or "universe + surroundings"?
I'm left without a choice. I have to study thermodynamics. If only Feynman had made a 'for dummies' book.
Thanks for the uploads maestro.
