I like to watch this video on a rainy day when I cant fly and just listen to vario!
I'd had a spectacular hour over Red Cliffs Utah enjoying the high mountain scenery and high altitude. I'd gone on glide hoping to try for thermal lift out in the valley and I'd been on glide for the better part of 4 miles but was still 2 miles from the LZ. I had the LZ made but it had been sink sometimes a lot of sink all the way and I was starting to worry that the flight was going to be over then I ran into an area of active air.
On glide the vario is on neto so you cant just jump on every beep but I could tell I was entering an area of more promising air, it took a couple of tries but I got connected with a good core, got the VG off and started up from about 7000. Ryan joined me at about 9000 with a large SLR camera mounted on his wing. He flies every which direction taking pictures but I'm not worried about him thermalling with me though I'm not about to stop turning and pose for the camera. At one point he slides under me yelling "Whooo-Hoooo!" and I laugh out loud 10 grand in the sky. People who don't fly have no idea what we do.
The climb tops out at 12300 about 400 feet higher than Mt. Nebo (the big mountain to the north). I would fly for another hour bouncing from one thermal to the next out in the valley, what a great flight!
Great video!
