The last 10 minutes or so of the season 3 episode "Crosetti". Oh, poor Meldrick just breaks my heart in this...

(It's okay if you cry. I won't tell anyone...)

  • Wow, great info! Thanks.

Do you remember a song in an episode, it was by a woman, that was either titled or had the chorus, "Out the front door backwards"? In the scene, a homicide victim is being wheeled out on a gurney, out the front door, backwards.

I'd love to find that song.

  • It took me a bit to find it, but it's the song "Full Moon, Empty Heart" by Belly. The lyrics are actually "out the window backwards". It played during the episode "Every Mother's Son" in season 3 (such a sad episode...)

  • I think it is anyway, I can't seem to find the exact scene with the gurney. But let me know either way :)

  • Jon Polito is such a great actor, it was a shame that they wrote off his character so early into the show.

On IMDB it says "Was not re-hired for season 2 of "Homicide: Life on the Street" (1993) by producer Tom Fontana due to a disagreement."

Does anyone know what that "disagreement" was?

  • According to an interview I read (I tried putting the link here, but youtube won't allow it) he was forced to leave because Fontana had to write in more "visually appealing" characters, but he told Polito that he would only be gone temporarily and that he would definitely have him back the following season. Polito was upset and didn't believe Fontana, and publicly complained. This pissed off Fontana, and he wrote to have Crosetti commit suicide.

  • To continue,

in this rather recent interview, Polito admitted that he regretted his decision to publicly complain and that he should have believed Fontana, because he realized that Fontana really would have stuck to his word. If you wanna read the interview, just google 'jon polito homicide interview' and go to the first link, which should be the website "Groucho Reviews".

  • Meldrick's breakdown in the squad room, when he knows he "can't protect Steve anymore" was one of the most heartwrenching scenes in the whole series.

  • This just makes me depressed at how bad the cop shows are on TV no!. You would NEVER see an episode like this on CSI, Without a Trace or Criminal Minds. Those guys don't have great writers or great Actors like Ned Beatty and Clark Johnson.

  • Its why I have all 7 seasons on DVD and a few of the Wire. The TV awards people have their heads up their asses when they ignore TV like this.

  • didnt agree with ned beatty all the time on hlots, but his acting was world class in this series and the show was not as good without him, daniel baldwin, and jon polito

  • Homicide is the greatest show of all time. EVER!! I used to plan my Fridays around this show when it orignally aired. The acting, the debth of the characters and the music. WOW!!! I watch the entire season once a year and it never gets old. There has been nothing to top this show. "The Shield" is close for obvious behind the scene reasons and maybe "Third Watch". NYPD Blue totally sucked!

  • Edie Falco

  • And why didn't Clark Johnson get an Emmy nod for this season?????? Such an underrated actor in this superior show!

  • I cried too-when it first aired, and teared up again watching it now. They literally had to back Lewis up against a wall ( in this case the Clearance Board ) for him to accept that Crosetti intentionally killed himself. And that "wall" had to tumble on down in tears.

And my man Pembleton on the steps in dress blues saluting Crosetti's last ride by the job was priceless.

  • Frank Pembleton's salute to his fallen brother, in dsidainful defiance of his superiors, was IMO the single most dramatic moment in network television drama. What a show!

  • I only watched this episode about four times and everytime I see Pembleton saluting Crosetti, I tear up. Damn I didn't see this scene for about a year. Even though I own the dvd set.

  • Only this show would have a line like "There's no way this crowd's gonna polish off 34 dozen cookies." Brilliant.

  • This is the best TV show. The actors play their characters perfect. This episode is one of my favorites.
