A sit-in or "plantón" is a demonstration method that is used to press the government to address a problem. People get blankets and supplies and sit down in front of public offices or public areas and are accompanied by other protesters who march, and they continue their actions until the government meets their demands.
The sit-in went on to inspire the radio project of the teachers' struggle and the creation of Sit-In Radio or "Radio Planton" that has become an important part of the long running conflict in Oaxaca and an example to the popular movements. Alive in Mexico was in Oaxaca a year before the beginning of the conflict and this is the first story
from that visit to the territories south of Mexico.
Early on June 14th there was an attempt by police to the evict the teachers' union seat and destroy the FM radio installed to support them. But this radio has become a symbol of the APPO [people's] movement and grows in frequency and range with the movement. While the movement grew over several months and broke out of government control the radio and television stations maintained almost complete control over the city as several zones of the state faced stones, wood, molotovs, and the entrance of military police into the zone.
Sit-In Radio served as the voice of the movement by dispersing information about the movement and played a key role in organizing the participation of hundreds of thousands of people.
In Oaxaca the tradition of community radio and free radio has received ample testimony to it's importance. In the future Alive in Mexico will be covering the first Anniversary of the repression of the Oaxacan Movement and its popular radio.
Un plantón es un método de manifestación en México, para presionar a las autoridades sobre algún asunto o problema, se instalan casas de campaña hechas con mantas y plásticos frente a oficinas de gobierno o en zonas publicas, acompañadas de otras protestas como marchas, hasta ver avances en sus demandas.
El planton fue lo que inspiro al proyecto radiofonico de la lucha de los maestros, Así nació Radio Planton que hoy en día es un personaje central dentro del largo conflicto en Oaxaca y a sido un ejemplo de lo que los medios en manos de movimientos populares es capaz de hacer. AiM estuvo en Oaxaca a un año del inicio del conflicto y esta es la primera entrega de esa visita a tierras del sur de Mexico.
La madrugada del 14 de junio en el intento de desalojo la policia ocupa la sede del sindicato de maestros y destruye la radio de FM instalada en apoyo a los maestros, esta radio se vuelve a equipar y crece en frecuencia y en audiencia, al mismo tiempo que crece el movimiento de la APPO que durante varios meses desarticulo el aparato estatal, tomo estaciones de radio y televisión, mantuvo el control casi total de la ciudad y de varias zonas en todo el estado, así como enfrento con piedras, palos y molotovs, el ingreso de policia militar a la zona.
Radio Planton sirvió para comunicar en el momento de los hechos toda la informacion del movimiento y fue un elemento clave de su horizontalidad y participación activa de cientos de miles de personas.
En Oaxaca la tradición de las radios comunitarias y radios libres lleva un amplio recorrido este es uno de sus testimonios. AiM estuvo otra vez en Oaxaca atento al primer aniversario de la represión al movimiento oaxaqueño y su radio popular.
