« Theater Montage » proves that Elfman is one of the best when it comes to write for « montage » sequence. His music follows the images, underlines one element or the other without being too heavy (note the elegant way he scored the "flowers" joke). The result here is something between Nino Rota and the music from Hollywood's Golden Age. Even though the cue begins with one of the very few (if not only) comical variation of Spider-Man's theme, Elfman delivers here a motif dedicated to the sequence, a motif able to be funny, majestic and even dramatic. I especially like the recurrent and obsessive "time" motif that announces that the clock is turning, that the evening is going to be great but also that Peter has to hurry up.
In the final cut, this was replaced by "Hold On" by Jet, a pop song that vaguely fits but doesn't evoke half of what Elfman wrote.
"Cops and Robbers" was mainly present in the final cut but an extract from "Revenge" from the first movie was used for the part where Spider-Man prevents the car from falling on the crowd and then swings through the truck. Elfman's version offers a very nice statement of the main heroic variation, with horns at first, giving the moment a sense of safety (the car has been stopped) and mystery (who did it ? -- the extra answering and resolving the musical tension with her "Go Spidey Go!").

More to come.

  • I think part of this music was used in the beginning of Spider-Man 3. I think at 1:36.

  • Yes, Christopher Young does quote the "Theater Montage" theme at the beginning of Spider-Man 3. How ironic...

  • Wow the last few notes at the end sounded like the SM3 Wal-Mart commercial....and the Theater Montage sounded sorta better in SM3.

  • The Jet song was horrible, so hollywood-ish tin your face these use...elfan score would have been better.

  • I actually agree with Raimi(boy, is that rare) that the Jet song worked better in this case. Sometimes you need to break things up a bit to keep from getting monotonous. Elfman's score was just ok to me. Nothing like the heights he reached in 89 with Burton's Batman score(which in and of itself ranges far enough that it wouldn't need a pop song to break the monotony). His Spider-Man scores by contrast pretty much stick to one thing and don't vary all that much.

  • anybody know the real song of this scene??? when Peter come out from his room... like 1:10

  • This song worked so much better. Wish they wouldn't have cut so much of Danny's score.

  • The song Hold On by Jet is on that scene.

  • Oh I like this better! It gives it a lot more action to it. Why did they reject this also?

    I think this works better!
