Legal Ethics - is it just an MCLE requirement? What does it mean to you? Whether you practice in California or New York, or any of the states in between, as an attorney you are subject to many ethical standards and guidelines. While the ABA's Model Rules of Professional Responsibility set the tone nationally for legal ethics, no attorney is actually subject to these rules. Instead, attorneys must turn to state ethics codes and rules that define standards of attorney conduct in the jurisdiction in which they practice. Although they are only advisory and do not carry the force of law, ethics opinions further define state codes and rules. The Internet and digital technologies further complicate the picture, as websites, email, metadata, and Web 2.0 make it even harder to act ethically in our new electronic age.
