AMATEUR astronomers are enjoying keeping track of the U.S. Militaries top secret space plane, the X-37B.

Launching in April, the X-37B got a lot of attention, although not a lot of information was released about it's true purpose.
Built by Boeing's Phantom Works division, the X-37B was actually originally headed by NASA.
It is currently under the supervision of a secretive Air Force unit.

Only a few in the US military know it's purpose, although observers on Earth think it's clearly the start
of the "weaponisation of space".

In May, the X-37B's behavior suggested it was testing sensors for new spy satellites.
It can also be a simple Satellite Tracker.

When the shuttle disappeared July 29th,
conspiracy theories about its fate started.

Amateur sky watcher Greg Roberts of Cape Town, South Africa, noticed it failed to appear
above his base on August 14. He spotted it five days later.

Greg Roberts noticed it was 30km higher and also on a different trajectory,
according to associates in Oklahoma and Rome.

The small change of orbit can be a test of the maneuvering system.

The shuttle has been orbiting for 124 days. It uses Solar array when in space for power,
this will allow it to be airborne for upwards of 270 days.

Although the presence of a rocket motor and large fuel tanks allows it to change orbit,
as onlookers noticed with it's latest change of course.

  • Are you guys for real or are you a machine that randomly puts words together and posts comments to put off people who are interested in the X37-B?

  • Maybe they just testing the new X-37B as long as possible and they try to simulate a ISS resque mission by changing orbit. It would be nice to have a resqueship nearby the ISS. The X-37B seems to be disigned to be a liveboat. But sure I believe it will also used for Spying on China’s unmanned Space Station Tiangong-1 . We talking USA here. lol

  • @gxbmb you too..... my sphincter still hasn't been able to fully close yet either. Damn aliens

  • i will start a new conspiracy.... It was abducted by aliens

  • marijuana or LSD?

  • "Only a few in the US military know its purpose." Oh fuck. As a civilian I shouldn't have the uber secret knowledge I do.

  • @Thetrutv For a re-useable unpiloted playload platform. Instead of placeing something in orbit for a short time, it can be put in orbit (or take something into orbit) and then return and resused again later. Also for shipments to platforms like the ISS instead of a one use rocket. In the long run it should be cheaper with a large and cheaper fleet then the orginal shuttle program was.

  • @candr Ow yeah. Do you know why they are testing all this things? Why did they even make it?

  • @freshkryp69 LOL 7-12 billion a launch!!! The entire budget for NASA is only about 9 Billion a year, about as much as we spend on a half a dozen bombers. Yeah I suppose you guys down there would be canned if it cost that much. Wonder where folk get these numbers, do they actually understand the difference in a comma and a decimal mark. Hope they ain't book keepers.

  • @Thetrutv It returned to Vandenberg AFB on December 3rd 2010. However a second one was sent to orbit in March 2011 and as far as I can find is still in orbit, but since its design limit was 9 months, they probably want to see how far it can stay up there beyond that.

  • Can Boeing just build a civilian version of this spacecraft and then lease it to NASA? That saves billions of dollars.
