I love it how it said "about the war" in this trailer but nowadays you'll have to say "about WW2" because nobody would know what the heck you'll be talking about.
This movie was actually shot using camera technology from the 1930's. Superb footage of WWII from the imperial war museum was interspersed with the story, making for great atmosphere.
the film was shown on june 6th 2009 on bbc2 . to mark the 65th anniversary of d-day . the final 5 mins of the film with amazing real d-day footage was accompanied by an excellent musical symphonic score that captured the atmosphere perfectly .
also saw this film 25 year ago,the tune, don,t know where we,ll going till we,re there, always comes to mind, when ever, any ww2 film is shown, does anyone know if that is the title,of the said tune,i think george formby sang it,great film, needs to be shown a bit more
Saw this last night on BBC4, never heard of it before then. Doesn't get anywhere near enough credit. Love the footage (i guess Hollywood sees it as too mundane, but the airborne shots are awesome). Also really liked how the surreal bits are really crisp, yet it looks like they did a pretty good job of weaving it with the grainier archive footage.
Cooper was in the paper recently. His cinematographer was used by Kubrick on Barry Lyndon. They all had a meeting. Kubrick told Cooper: "Only one thing wrong with this film". Cooper: "what's that"
Kubrick: "It's about an hour and a half too short."
