I had this conversation with my girlfriend recently, I think the broken down sound of his voice in the later stuff added to the emotion in his writing. This is absolutely heartbreaking though.

I guess this is was a few months before TVZ died, how terrible and painful his voice was.Hearing this, it hurt´s me so much more than hear one of his most saddest songs.

The music Johnny Cash did prior to his death (American Highways) had such strengh of feeling that it made it almost surreal; you're right, though sbout Townes here- it is terribly painful , especially for those of us who have been with him and his music for decades. My heart is broken.
