UPDATE 24/05/2011:Thankyou to @hedgehoglet for the Russian Subtitles
UPDATE 11/10/2010: Thanks to Stephen Fry for mentioning this video on his twitter account, rather exciting!

Using the wonderful words of acclaimed writer, actor and allround know it all (I mean that in the best of ways) Stephen Fry I have created this kinetic typography animation. If you like what you hear you can download the rest of the audio file from Mr. Fry's website. stephenfry.com and then go to the audio and video section at the top of the page and look for the file entitled language. You can also find the file on iTunes by searching the name 'Stephen Fry's Podgrams'.

I loved this particular essay on language and I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to make my first kinetic typography video. I hope you like it and even if you dont I would like to heard what you think in the comments section. Also I know that at points the audio does not match the text so you do not have to write that. It is because I copied the transcript off of Stephen's website and it was not 100% exactly what he said and i did not notice until I was well underway. However these cases are few and far between.

Just incase you were wondering the programs I used to make this were all by Adobe. Mostly After Effects but also Flash and Illustrator. Flash for the changing background colour transitions and illustrator for putting the words in to the shape of 'language' before loading it into After Effects to animate.

Enjoy

Being a lover of language, I understand Recrofne's perspective. I'm completely in favour of the evolution of language, but we must remember: evolution and destruction are not the same thing, which is why grammatical rules and some other conventions are still of some importance.

I think what Recrofne meant by "sad" was that the lack of love and respect shown towards language nowadays is quite shocking, and I completely agree with him. Language is part of a cultural identity; it deserves respect.

The komma was originally designed to indicate a pause between words or lines when reading. If there is no pause in spoken language then why should there be in the written form?

"Typos are fine, everyone makes them"

In old English what you would have said there is "gedwola beon god, ealle don hie"

Or in Latin "denique sunt errores, omnibus illis facit"

But somehow your current version is now the ultimate destination, with the continuing evolution & experimentation of written expression somehow a "downfall of language"?

And it makes you "sad" does it? Man, you need to get out more :D

Typos are fine, everyone makes them. What isn't fine is people who have somehow graduated typng like dis al the tme n usin wrds lik r n u 2 try 2 frm sme a sentnce. Many honestly can't type better, do not care and see nothing wrong.

I don't know about other people, but this downfall of language makes me very sad. I value education and do not wish to have a world without it. Sure, you don't have to type perfectly, but making an effort is important.

People who "wryte liek dis" do enough to display their lack of intelligence on their own, there's no need to point it out.
