Here is a video of one of our LTQ-FT's (Thermo) undergoing a quench of its JASTEC magnet.
This occurs when the energy stored in teh super-conducting magnet get dissapaited into the surrounding bath of liquid helium. The helium rapidly boils off. The plumb of "smoke" is actually condensed water vapor. This will go on violently for about 5-10 minutes and then continue with lowering intensity for about another 30 minutes.
As you can see, it is not a subtle occurance. The two dangers are cold (dont get in front of the vent ports) and oxygen depravation. Although, in this room, the O2 level was not impacted (as shown by the o2 sensor near the end of the video).
