Camp REFUGE(e) | ABF Summer Camp 2011

The goal of summer camp was to get to know Jesus better, and love and obey him more. As Americans, we usually pursue this goal with fun travel by bus, crazy games, popular worship bands with fancy equipment, padded chairs, air conditioned dorm rooms, and cafeterias with multiple food choices.

Meanwhile, millions of men, women, and children live in extreme poverty all over the world. They struggle to survive -- each day is filled with a pursuit for clean water, a basic meal, and a place to lay their head. Ironically, Jesus' experience was closer to this. Matthew 8:20 says, "And Jesus said to him, 'Foxes have holes, and birds of the air haves nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head."

Are we looking for Jesus in the wrong place?

This summer, "youth camp" looked and felt a bit different. We built our shelters, ate simply, and served others. The main goal was to understand that God is our Refuge-not our houses, cars, pantries, and bank accounts. We wrestled with why it is so difficult for the rich to enter the kingdom of God (Matthew 19:23), and got a taste of what life is like for refugees all over the world.

We went and "roughed it" for a reason. We wanted to hear from God, and get a good look at our hearts.

It wasn't easy, but it was good. My hope and prayer is that everyone came out of the experience with a humbled heart that longs to live a generous life in the name of Jesus, for the less fortunate that God has put all around us.
