  • Do you sell sport morgans? I currently own a morgan, and its probably my favorite breed (then warmbloods and thoroughbreds come next). If you check out my website, it will give you an ounce more into my riding. I plan to do 4* eventing eventually, though the problem is getting the proper horses, for a decent price.

  • @Hunterjumpereventer Yes I do. I have two for sale and both are by Declaration. One is a Morgan Thoroughbred cross named Mosswood's Laurel. She is five years old. The other is a pure Morgan two and a half year old filly named Mosswood's Willow. Both have videos under their own names on YouTube. Check them out!

  • Thanks for everyone's input on this video. I have trouble sometimes with the "approval" link to Youtube that allows me to accept comments for posting. I apologize for the delays! If someone has a tip on how to make this work consistently, please let me know.

  • You don't need to sell me on Morgans in general in fact they are the only horse I would choose to own as I feel they are superior to all others. The problem I see is that breeders take inferior stock and breed it on and to sell what they breed they come up with all sorts of selling points to cover what they have. If the horse doesn't have any action then it's a, "sports horse". Nothing wrong with a sports horse but like I said they shouldn't be left intact.

  • Great! I agree that "sport horse" should not be a catch-all for inferior Morgans. I have five tests for my breeding stock - conformation and type (winning Justin Morgan or breed standard at a recognized show); temperament; quality offspring; and performance-tested versatility. Combined driving is a great test of Figure's original versatility and endurance. Declaration has won CDEs at the international level and RC Justin Morgan standard. Figure was not a Park horse champion either. He bred on.

  • I can't see using a "Sports horse" for stud. He's a nice horse but not stud material. Breed for Park and the horses that don't make it in that division should be cut and used in the Sport or English Pleasure. We are getting so far removed from what the original Morgan was it's very sad. There was a time when white wasn't allowed above the knee now you have white Morgans, palominos, gaited Morgans who the hell has taken over the Morgan Horse Association?

  • The first Morgan horse, "Figure," pulled carriages, hauled logs out of the woods, raced, and carried a music teacher in the saddle for miles on the road. Descendants were good trotters; but valued by the US cavalry for their strong hooves, strength, moderate size, temperament and endurance. Morgans can be good Park horses, but versatility counts more. Combined driving requires versatility; it is an excellent test for Morgan studs. Figure would have excelled at it.

  • @o0sunsi0o - The Morgan in this video is an outstanding example of the orginal type Morgan. His overall athletic ability and outstanding movement are evident. If someone wants an American Saddlebred, they should get one.

  • @JSims2332 Thank you! I'm trying to make sure i have resources for then I can get what i need to be able to compete. i'll make sure to keep you in mind.

  • Holy cow! Now that I have read the comments below I have a better understanding of how they breed the park horses. I own, among my healthy, strong, well-conformed, sane, sound "sport " morgans, a straight shouldered, crunchy hooved, nasty tempered, saddlebred headed "park" mare. She was bred often and passed these traits, but by golly she's got ACTION! And that's all that matters, right? Stick ginger up their rumps and watch 'em prance. Now that's a breeding quality horse!

  • My apologises JSims it seems I came on gangbusters when in fact we both love and adore Morgan Horses. I started out with a Quarterhorse boarding him at a Morgan show stable. Well, my little Quarterhorse with his shuffling gait next to those beautiful, high stepping Morgans and I saw my mistake. :)

  • We love the Equinox lines, and use them for breeding stock. We enjoy them for carriage, trail, mountain packing and riding, lessons. They have awesome heart and athletic ability, soundness and beauty. Declaration is a fine example of Morgan "can-do". Anyone saying sport horses are inferior and should not be bred is showing their ignorance. I wouldn't prefer to take a park horse into a crowded street parade, or up a wooded Montana mountain trail.
