The economic downturn will mean fewer people from outside the European Union are allowed to live and work in Britain, the UK Immigration Minister Phil Woolas has suggested.

Mr Woolas told the Times newspaper that in times of economic difficulty, racial stereotyping gets stronger so jobs should go primarily to those who live here.

He said when people were losing their jobs, immigration had become an extremely thorny issue.

Mr Woolas said the government would not allow the population to go up to 70 million.

Do you agree with Mr Woolas? Is he making an economic or political point? Should there be a 70 million limit on the UK population? Have you lost a job recently? Or do you hire immigrants to run a business?

  • There is no more England - forever - this generation gave away their culture and the British ethnic identity... gave it away out of fear of being called racist by the liberals that took over.

  • Only the failures in life rush to blame immigration for their economic and intelectuall bankruptcy. What stops you from going to school and Univesity, seeing it's very cheap for locals to do so?. You reap what you sow in life, if you are uneducated don't think being british will get you a job that you aren't qualified to do. Get your asses up and go to school.dumb mufuckas!!!!!

  • I'm not racist but I'd rather have White people here than non-Europeans. Plus the EU immigrants don't stick around too long, they go home within a couple of years.

  • oh my God,this is what a former ambasador in nigeria called the( voodoo economy) when did politicians started practicing voodoo mathematics?,300million EU citicens can come but 100,000 nonEU will make population go up.i hope this man need to resit his maths GCSE before continuing his job.

  • use your logic, with regards to the slow down in the economy, if people are loosing their jobs as we stand now, it will only get worse in the next few months. So if companies are down sizing, hence less jobs available it would make sense to limit the amount of people allowed in. For one i dont have a problem with people coming over here to live and work, i do however have a problem with people coming over here illigally or over staying their welcome and living off our state benefits.
