does anyone know what the purpose of the poem is?? im doin it for an english assignment and it is quite confusing.

Hi Soapy - de la Mare was often asked this question but was unable to give a satisfactory answer. If you want to be really studious you might look out 'The Life of Walter de la Mare' by Theresa Whistler and at the end of Chapter 10 is a letter de la Mare wrote on this subject which would be worth quoting in your assignment. In particular his statement 'I am now a little vague concerning what was the intended meaning of those particular lines.'
