We examine why so many war criminals find refuge in Australia.

We meet one of Australia's most notorious war crimes suspects -Dragan Vasiljkovic. He lives in Belgrade and he's homesick. He says: 'I do call Australia home...one day I will return back to Australia.' Vasiljkovic carries an Australian passport and the Australian Army trained him. He became a very well trained and capable commando officer who simply didn't abide by any rules. He's the new face on an old problem; how to deal with war criminals who've become Australian citizens. The problem is that Australia simply turns a blind eye.When former Nazi officer Konrad Kalejs flew out of the United Kingdom last month, the British resolve to get rid of him was matched by a worldwide perception of Australia's weakness in failing to prosecute him. Konrad Kalejs is just the most famous name on a long list of former Nazis who've found sanctuary in Australia.

Why is it that hatred is poured out on a man like Kalejs when those on the allied side responsible for the fire bombing of Dresden went completely unpunished? The British Air Staff especially Air Marshall Harris were responsible for the deaths of over 100,000 German civilians by bombing a city for no military objective save the destruction of German morale by mass murder. The alleged crimes of Kalejs pale into insignifigance beside the British and American atrocities against civilians.

The victors write the history books and apportion the blame. They attach the stigma of war crimes to individuals like Kalejs who were following orders and carrying out their duties. These individuals were "involved" in the deaths of thousands therefore they are criminals according to the victorious powers. So were many allied servicemen and their leaders who were responsible for the terror bombing of German cities that resulted in the deaths of thousands of innocent civilians.

I should like to ask the Americans if it is true that they gave Heinrich Müller of the Gestapo US citizenship and a position in the CIA from 1948 to 1951 afterward granting him a pension in gratitude for his anti communist activities. Or is that too delicate a question to ask?

What posturing by the Americans! The USA profited from the expertise of so called "war criminals". The best example is Wernher von Braun who was responsible for the V1 and V2 rockets. These were not combat weapons but terror weapons used to randomly kill civilians. If the Americans hadn't carried him off as a war prize he would have undoubtedly been tried as a war criminal for "crimes against humanity". Instead a Nazi rocket scientist joined NASA and helped put man on the moon. How very nice.
