We have made a weather-application that the air-force can use for
checking the weather conditions before sending in parachuters. At a
quick glance they get information about the visibility and wind speed
with an indication if it is OK or not to send the troops in.
The prototype
The application is built with the program Processing, an Arduino-board
with a button connected to it and live weather feeds from BBC uploaded
to the site Pachube.
How it works
In the prototype you can choose between the destinations Malmo and
Rome. In this version you switch location by pressing a button. When
you have chosen your destination the weather conditions are displayed
over a map of Europe. The chosen destination and the weather
conditions are displayed in text in the lower left hand corner of the
map. You will then get one out of three responses. Either you get an
OK to go ahead with the mission, a caution-sign that the conditions
are stable but not perfect or you get an abort-sign (see pictures
below). The weather conditions are updated every five seconds.
