Two of us booked Economy seats on Air New Zealand's new 777-300ER for a recent long haul Pacific crossing [Aircraft ZK-OKN]. We were given the option of upgrading to the "Skycouch" on this particular plane and decided to give it a try. Very nice. (You are guaranteed to have the center seat open.) The "couch" has numerous configurations; you can use it as a leg rest, or in the extended and locked position to make a bed. During boarding you are given a thin mattress pad and two extra large pillows to use. You are also given a seatbelt kit that allows you to stay secure no matter what size (children) or position you're in. (There are metal brackets under the seat pocket in front of you to clip the belts to.)
Aside from the Skycouch, Pacific Economy is really nice on the 777-300s. The Inflight Entertainment System is very good. In addition, you can order drinks, snacks and other items that are delivered to your seat. Pretty cool. Self service shelves at the exit rows allow you to have a snack or drink whenever you like.
The most noticeable feature of our Air New Zealand flights however, were the really friendly crew. We flew SFO-AKL-SYD-CHC-AKL-LAX, and every flight found us commenting on how nice the crew was. They all looked sharp and were consistently helpful and cheerful.

  • did they upgrade you to skycouch for free or paid and if you paid how much did you pay?

  • @TheYay1995 We were able to upgrade when booking on the Air New Zealand website. I've read the cost for Skycouch is typically 1/2 the price of what the empty middle seat would have sold for. We paid $400 US for AKL-LAX.

  • @philipharveynz LOL. Camera's don't affect the navigational instruments. I get pissed when FA's tell me to put away the camera. They don't know what they're talking about.

  • When I flew from LHR to LAX last year I didn't pay for the Skycouch but ended up having the whole row of seats to myself :)

  • What wing flex! Breathtaking.

  • @philipharveynz

They're going to have to arrest a large number of people, just taking into account the number of people on youtube who do this, let alone the ones who record for themselves. As far as I understand it it's anything that transmits or receives that can theoretically interfere with navigational instrumentation.

By the way I've got a few flightdeck DVD's at home, official ones, with multiple camera views and they are sanctioned by the actual airlines.

  • You might want to take this down before you are arrested for using electronic devices during take off and landing

  • very cool... hope you had a wonderful time

  • Thanks for the trip report! Looks like a good product!
