JD Daw singing "Awaiting You" (Myths and Hymns) and performing a monologue from "Take Me Out" at the 2007 Penn State Musical Theatre Senior Showcase Dress Rehearsal.
I have to say I disagree with the detractors on this. Vocally it's more intense than Billy's version, but this is a valid performance choice for me. Sometimes belting the high D is necessary!
I'd just work on changing some of the arbitrary arm movements :P
He completely misses the point of this song. He's like an automaton. This has the potential to be so beautiful, and he just hammers out the whole thing. Listen to Billy Porter's version. It's incredible. This guy certainly has potential, but he missed the mark on this one. Maybe it's just the wrong song for him.
@IIIThreat Are you basing all of what you believe this guy can do out of this one performance. For performing the peice he does great. Yea, always room for improvement, that can be said about even the most amazing actors, it's a general fact. So why are you using a general fact in light of someone elses praises of the guy. There is never a piece that can't be worked to be better, that's theatre, so is there never an instance when we are aloud to be satisfied with a good performance?
@87BMOC Further, I have no doubt that he will make it: he's a handsome guy, with a great voice. The thing that concerns me is that he is given a lot of clout, and when that happens we tend to get comfortable. There is ALWAYS someone better out there. We must not forget that.
I agree with you about the song @87BMOC, but he is an attractive guy, though. The thing is I don't really see anything different about him that will make him "stand out" in a musical theatre sense. There are many clones of guys like him: white guys that can sing the hell out of musical theatre. Great, but what else can he do? What makes him marketable? In the world of musical theatre we have to be honest with ourselves. Never stop looking for ways to make yourself stand out.
Okay, okay. So this guy can obviously sing, but this is NOT the song for him. It sounds too "musical theatre-ish", and his high notes sound forced and coerced. This is the difficult thing about picking musical theatre songs for auditions and such: your voice has to fit the style. Just because you have the ability to sing a song does not mean the song is for you. This is also the joy of musical theatre versus classical singing in that you can be individual. In essence, pick another song man.
wow, tough crowd in the audience tonight! :p
