Ali is perhaps the most important proponent of social democracy and all around intellect alive today. He certainly is a much better speaker than Chomsky. Michael Parenti is another important critic of laissez faire capitalism and its murderous enforcer the military/cia complex.

@gladorin. You know, if Islam is about compassion and mercy, I must say that Tariq Ali is already walking that path. I think when someone like T. Ali claims to be an atheist, what he is basically saying is that 'no outside authority will determine my actions other than myself, guided by reason and a sense of empathy.'

He's fighting for peace and justice in the world which IS fighting on behalf of muslims as there is so much injustice towards them. E.g Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine for the past 60 years. The western backed tyrant kings and presidents of the Arab world who are opressing their people etc.

Abi Talib the Prophets uncle protected Mohammed until the day he died and he was never muslim. Thus it does not really matter a persons faith, but it what is in their heart.

Irrelevant. Everything he say's is in benefit of Islam, and in benefit of all human beings, whether he is calling for the removal of corrupt leaders in the middle east, or in latin america etc.
He may be agnostic but he is fighting on behalf of muslims 100x more than our own muslim intellectuals do.

Look your missing the point entirely. The point being that you don't have to be a muslim to defend Islam. And if all you can say about Abi Talib is that he is in hell, thats a sad fact. Another non muslim who aided the muslims was the king of Abyssinia. Why do you have to condemn such people? Why don't you pray to Allah that Tariq Ali and others like him will be guided to the right path. Islam is about compassion and mercy not condemnation.
