And yes, there is some forms of long range bombardment each class has. Siege tanks, Colossus, Brood lords, etc.

Well, The main issue is investment. Investing in defense to stay at home on the base is only done if need be, because you are using potential army resources. In a situation where it is just static defense in your base vs an opponents army, you are most likely going to lose. Even if your defenses hold off, your opponent has wiped out your army, most of your defense and your economy with it. After doing the damage, he can stay at home and grow stronger as you try to recover.
