While having a better mech helps, it's overall fire-power is usless if it's pilot own phisicle statisics are poor.

A fighter Jet could defeat A SRX if the former has a much better pilot.

Couple that with the fact that this was only Ryoma's second fight using Shin Getter and well....

This whole battle was really, really stupid. They didn't need to change quickly at all, Shin Getter can wipe the floor with Dragon. The ONLY reason they needed to do that in the Shin Getter Manga was because Dragon can beat the shit out of the original Getter in a standard fight.
