Sept. 19, 2011: Annenberg Research Seminar - John Durham Peters, University of Iowa

Please join students and faculty for a presentation by A. Craig Baird Professor in Communication Studies, John Durham Peters, University of Iowa. His topic: "Two Cheers for Technological Determinism."

From Dr. Peters: "The concept of 'technological determinism' is in desperate need of a critical intellectual history and reevaluation. It is more often an accusation than a doctrine honestly advocated, and the threat of being called a 'technological determinist' often intimidates inquiry. The very project of media studies--to show that shape, form, delivery, ownership, control matter--is jeopardized if technological determinism is always a curse word. This paper explores the origins and history of the term and other ways of thinking about the meaning of technology."
