If thats why you think he should be punished, then you should be complaining about the people that put him there. The reason for the war is not up to him, he was following orders.
btw Polygraphs do not reveal actual events, but the perceptions of the individual taking them. If the guy who took the test had remorse and felt responsible for what happened, even if it was justified, it would have probably shown up not in his favor.

This is crazy. Why are we cannibalizing our veterans like this? It reminds me of the Joker's line in Dark Knight, predicting that Batman will be "cast out, like a leper" once society no longer needs him. How society's morals, its code, "it's a bad joke...dropped at the first sign of trouble". Likewise we send Marines into a bloody sectarian war without mercy (where US POWs are butchered alive) on a mission to kill insurgents, but once the chaos subsides, we go on a witch hunt to lynch our vets.
