This video was originally made as part of my school assignment. It features me playing a drum solo based on clave son 3-2 ostinato. I mainly play some basic rudiments with my hands around the kit in different note values and time signatures, while the feet are just keeping the ostinato going.

Equipment used in recording:
-Sony Handycam MiniDV
-Fostex VF-16
-Behringer Ultragain Pro-8 Digital ADA8000
-Shure Beta52
-Röde NT5 Pair

...with fairly minimal editing, effects etc.

  • can I record with 8 mics just using the Behringer Ultragain Pro-8 Digital ADA8000? Or do I need a mixer to use with it? thanks!

  • @TheMetalOracle You will need an interface that has an ADAT input. Usually you can find ADAT in digital multitrack recorders/mixers and advanced sound cards/audio interfaces.

  • Thomas....any chance you'd be willing to share the written out pattern you're playing with your left ANd right feet?

I'm in total awe.... where can I fine your feet pattern written out?

    Thanks!

  • @BradMontgomery1 Thanks for the interest Brad! Here's something I quickly did with GuitarPro.

Here, number 36 would be the bass drum and number 75 would be the 3-2 Son clave. Hope this helps!

  • Great independence, but like newfunkdrummer said there's no clave, latin feel in what you're playing with your hands. Look up up Horacio Hernandez and see how everything he plays anywhere is in clave when playing latin, everything. You're an awesome drummer tho I have to say, great job!

  • Thanks for the feedback everyone!

I can honestly say that I'm a real beginner, when it comes to playing clave or latin rhythms in general. This particular solo is mainly focused on independence with an ostinato and different patterns played over it. The ostinato basically just happens to be clave. Therefore the solo is not meant to be an expression of true latin feel.

  • Fake. He is not a man, he is a machine. You can clearly see the powercable going up along his back to his head.

  • that looks so effortless! nice!

  • wow !

  • arriesgate un poco mas

  • You've only been playing for 10 years! Great job.

I would screw up some of the independence.

When people including me try to do stuff like this, there's always a problem in accuracy.

Some make a fuss about the lack of Afro-Cuban feel, but I understand it's an experiment to see how all the independent ideas might work, and eventually apply it to real musical situations, and then that's the time you might give some intonations to this to implement it.

Please come check out some of mine, too!
