Anne Boyd presents St Catherine of Siena at John Garrat Publishing

What kind of language do we use when we speak about God? How does an artist express the inexpressible? How can the lives of the mystics those who search for what is hidden help us to recognise that God comes to us disguised as our lives - Von Balthasar.

These are some of the questions underlying Anne Margot Boyds research into the life and writings of St Catherine of Siena and especially into a series of medieval paintings of Catherine by the artist, Giovanni di Paolo.

This evenings illustrated presentation offers a chance to see these small, exquisitely painted panels displayed on a big screen and to explore how the artist presented the saint in terms of the universals of Christian life. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the contribution of the mystics to contemporary spirituality.

Anne Margot Boyd is an Australian who, in 1955, joined the Dominican contemplative community at Carisbrooke on the Isle of Wight, England. She was one of the founders of Carisbrooke Priory Press which flourished in the 1960s. Later she worked at Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, for 13 years. In the 1980s Anne edited the Geoffrey Chapman list of Catholic theology, liturgy and catechetics for Cassell Publishers in London. In 1989 she returned to Australia where she now lives, combing freelance writing, editing and publishing. Since completing the Voices Essay on St Catherine for John Garratt, Anne has launched a community newspaper for Ferntree Gully.
