Clapton while a brilliant performer plays a style of blues derived from "a classic" blues solo repetoire. If you listen to early Cream, Clapton was far more innovative in 1966 than he is in this performance. That's not to put it down, because this is great bluesmanship. Jimi on the other hand was far more innovative. I saw Jimi perform and he seemed like a formula 1 driver - pedal to the metal AT ALL TIMES. You thought he would lose it and crash. He never did on stage. But the pace killed him.

We could speculate all day on how great Hendrix would be now if he were still alive. But he's not, and Clapton is. That's not speculation, that is fact.
This is also fact: Jimi Hendrix is regarded by many as one of the greatest guitarists of any genre ever. His contributions to guitar an music in general, in such a short time, have had a staggering impact on music.
My point: both guitarists are among the greatest ever, and comparing the two comes down more to opinion than matters of fact.

but there is alot to be said for longevity, and we know how that worked out for Hendrix!

IDK about that...Hendrix's skill and knowledge was above that of Clapton's during his lifetime, but I think Clapton reached that level by the mid-90's. He's slowed down a little since, but by that I just mean he's "trimmed the fat" from his playing. Have you heard the rendition of "Voodoo Chile" he did with Winwood last year? Wow.
