The flexhaler is a dry powder inhaler that delivers steroid medicine, which is used to prevent asthma and its symptoms. Watch how to properly use the pulmicort flexhaler for asthma relief.

This video is an excerpt from the DVD Living With Asthma: A Guide to Controlling Your Asthma produced by St. Louis Children's Hospital.

  • does the number of doses left change on its own?? because i did it and it still says "120" remaining

  • @elenemarie If you hold the inhaler upright and twist the brown grip one direction as far as it will go, then twist the other direction until you hear the "click", and then inhale - the counter should move very slightly down one dose. You may not see each movement of the dose counter because it is marked 120 l 100 and not marked with each number. After a few doses you should notice that the counter is moving.

  • How can I check, if it works properly? I'm asking, because I don't feel any powder when inhaling. (I used turbuhaler before).

This gear under transparent window, should it move?

  • @skevar7 The powder is very fine and there is not a taste to Pulmicort. A deep inspiration is recommended. It is important to hold the inhaler upright. Use one hand to hold the middle of the inhaler (do not hold the mouthpiece) and use the other hand to hold the brown grip (bottom of the flexhaler). Twist the brown grip one direction (the direction doesn't matter) and then the other direction until you hear a "click". That indicates that the powder is set to breathe it in. (continued...)

  • @skevar7 Continue to hold the inhaler upright and have the child breathe in deeply. It is not necessary for the child to hold his breath. The "gear" behind the clear window is a dose counter window that counts down the doses that are used. It moves slowly but counts down to 0 and will let you know when it is time to refill. Be sure to only "click" once for each inhaled dose. Keep the flexhaler dry and replace the lid when finished.

  • This is a good demonstration. They didn't show one thing in the video, however: patients should be sure to rinse and then SPIT OUT the fluid. This ensures elimination of medication from the mouth and prevents the drug from reaching the rest of the body via the stomach. In other words, spitting out reduces side effects.

  • @comedymy1name It will only give one dose at a time, no matter how often you click the brown grip, but the dose indicator will continue to move (advance). This means that if you continue to move the brown grip, it is possible for the indicator to show fewer doses or zero doses even if more doses are left in the inhaler.

  • @ChildrensHospitalStl Thank you for the information

    Good day!

  • @cairo69 It is twist, click, inhale. Once you hear the click you are ready to inhale.
