Here are 9 naturalized Blue-and-yellow Macaws visiting a private yard at Coral Gables. Sorry about all the talking; this was recorded indoors. The flock took off when a female Cooper's Hawk (not visible) buzzed the feeder while attacking a Rock Pigeon.

  • TheRacer,

Yes, both Blue-and-yellow and Chestnut-fronted macaws are breeding in southeastern Florida, and both began breeding in the 1980s.

  • omg, thank you now I know I am not crazy. I saw a pair when I was at the Starbucks next to Fire Station 2 on South Dixie Hwy this morning and saw a pair land in one of the big palms in the center median and hang upside down from the palm fronds except from my distance they looked more green than blue and seemed to blend in with the palm fronds

  • If the macaws were green, then they would have been Chestnut-fronted Macaws ("Noble macaw" or "Severe Macaw" in the pet-trade lingo). There are more Chestnut-fronteds free-flying in the Fort Lauderdale and Miami areas than there are Blue-and-yellows.

  • Loved this video. Are these escapees from Parrot Jungle? I own 4 BGs and they interact the same way as these birds. Thanks for feeding them!

  • No, they are descendants of escapees during the height of importation in the 1970s-1980s. A small population has been breeding in the area since at least 1986.

  • Nice garden .

  • you should capture them ship me a pair $ to california

  • Never thought I'd see a video of one of these hanging in a fishtail palm. Great video Bill. Great guide too. I've been using it since the mid 90s.

  • In the palm tree of my backyard, there were SIX blue-yellow macaws squawking like hell!!

First there were 3 squawking, then I heard squawking from far away. The far squawks got closer until they flew in and joined the other 3!! I stood watching them for 30 minutes. Very beautiful, funny creatures.

  • Mr. Pranty is there still any evidence of these or other species of Macaws still living AND breeding in South Florida?

  • I was very fortunate to see these birds myself recently. An amazing sight!

  • What an awesome clip, you have the best Florida bird videos on here!
