I write a lot of fiction. You've nailed down a lot of very true and solid points about point of view.
Personally, I've never liked stories written in present tense nearly as much as those in past tense (the only exception is thoughts, as you said, because we all think in present tense).
Good job so far.

I read many fantasy books and I noticed most authors write between first person and third person in a paragraph. So for example the author will describe a battle that the character is engaged in. Woven into the paragraph will be the characters first-person thoughts about the battle as it is happening. When the author uses this method text is italicized. What do you think about this?

Hi, Kxmode. To share the character's is a good thing. There are two main ways to do it. You can share the thoughts in first person present tense, or you can share them as the narrator in the narrator's tense.
He couldn't stand how his wife grinded her teeth. << Character's thoughts shared via the narrator.
He sat down and thought, I can't stand her grinding her damn teeth.
