The windows media center can play all kinds of video formats, including avi, divx, flv, swf, rm/rmvb, mov, wmv, mpg, mp4, mkv, ts, vcd/dat, DVD/vob, etc...

Here is how to do it:

1) install xp codec pack
(or vista codec pack if you are using vista)

2) install real alternatives
3) install halli media splitter
4) reboot machine

After installing all the above, play your videos using the "media player classic" that came with the xp/vista codec pack. It should be able to play all the video formats listed above.

Now, the next step is to make the windows media center recognize these video formats and display them in its video library. To do that, you need to edit the registry.

Read the link below (or search the google) for more details on how to edit the registry:

  • Never Count On Vista. UPRGRADE TO 7!

  • is there one for vista??

  • Can't play .mkv files and if you want to play an ISO file it has to be mounted first just like with any other media player.

  • @speckyprick You think I didn't Google it? That was the first thing I did before coming here! There was nothing! Anyway, I found it. One day, I saw Media Center icon down the right which was downloading Updates and then I right clicked on it and I selected "Open Media Center". When it opened, I clicked to keep it at Windows taskbar and now there I have it! I had searched my whole PC and the .exe file was nowhere before making Updates!

  • @WolvesDominationGR You can stop being one of those morons who post comments on Youtube expecting everyone to just help you cos you don't have the patience / intelligence / maturity / initiative / common sense to just fucking Google it like every other person would!!!

  • I lost my Windows 7 Media Center .exe file and I want to reinstall it again! What can I do?

  • i have a windows media file but idk how to add it to windows media library so i can watch it
