  • was he pro player

  • No. Jim is however a fully qualified coach with the English Table Tennis Association (ETTA). He is also an ETTA Coach for training and assessing people who want to be coaches.

  • which part of the paddle do you use for topspin? which side is the best?

  • After speaking with Jim, for this shot you hit the ball in the centre of the blade. Important to consider if you want to create topspin is the part of the ball you hit and this should be the top third of the ball and not the back of the ball and thats why Jim discusses in the videos closing the angle of the bat slightly; the position of the elbow should also be a little lower towards the body which bends the wrist and the wrist should always be used when top spinning. Hope this helps.

If you hit the ball close to your handle, you will give less spin. If you hit the ball far away from the handle, you give more spin. This is simply cuz the movement of the upper part of the bat is faster than the lower part, like when you turn around with your arms stretched, your hands will cover the most distance.

The placement off the ball close to the handle is often used to make the opponent think a spinny ball is coming cuz of the movement, but then its not much spin at all.
