The big wheel of paris with the obelisque; 18th dec 2009 - helen
History: "Grande Roue de Paris was a 100 metre Ferris wheel built in 1900 for the Exposition Universelle world exhibition at Paris. The passenger cars were so large that they were removed from the Wheel and used as homes for French families in the region devastated by the World War.[1]
It was demolished in 1920[2."
Modern Wheel: The Grande Roue is 60 m high. It was built for the millennium celebrations and was supposed to stay at the Place de la Concorde for only one year. The owner Marcel Campion refused a judges order to have the wheel taken down so that after much controversy the wheel was dismantled in 2002. After that the wheel was re-erected in the UK in 2003 and 2004, and later the Netherlands and Bangkok. The Grande Roue came back to Paris in 2007 and is supposed to come back each year in Paris and illuminate the Place de la Concorde and Tuileries for the end of the year festivities.
I am very sad that Marcel Campion couldn't keep the Grande Roue there... I would've loved riding on it.
