@Interessant11 I think perhaps you're coming from Shakespeare at an acting angle, while I am coming from a literary one, which is fine of course. The criticism of sublety is a relative one based on an historicism viewpoint. While plot points were never subtle, his characters were. Often, while the plots were clear, they were still complex. Othello at three interweaving stories which were all important, and took place within the main story of Othello's weakness.
@Interessant11 Shakespeare is pretty far from Melodrama. I studied Melodrama, which is fun in its own right, but Shakespeare has a level of complexity still not seen in modern stage, and especially film. I have to disagree with you on Shakespeare not having subtext, as it pretty much was all subtext. Was the Merchant of Venice an anti-semetic play? or did it depict Jews as real people who "if you prick them, do [they] not bleed?". This is stuff worth analyzing, and theres a lot more.
@Interessant11 Shakespearean style of acting? Shakespeare never wrote his chracters over the top, and since he was an actor himself I don't think he wanted it to be anything but believable on stage. Shakespeare was the first to create a psychological realism in characters that it takes a lot of acting experience to pull it off brilliantly. Not sure where you go your info, but as someone who dedicated years to studying Shakespeare, I can tell you that you are misinformed.
