The association between cars and freedom is laughable. Think of what needs to be tamed to grant us that freedom. Concrete and tarmac obliterating ecosystems. The political-economy of oil. The entanglements of law, insurance and status. The huge backup needed - garages, hospitals and filling stations. All to sit in queues because we can work miles from where we live.
My picture shows a timid couple, trapped in their tin box waiting for the road and the oil to run out. Whence nature's anarchy will overwhelm them.
There is a world outside the car,
Beyond the verge - over the edge.
Beyond the lawns and tidy fields -
Behind the privet hedge. Far from
Everlasting urban light and the
Humming of the grid. Out of
Range of central-heating.
In the land of God Forbid!
It is not the sort of place you'd like to go to after dark,
(Or even in bright daylight) it is lonely cold and stark. It is
Full of scarey creatures. They might release the hounds. If it
Isn't private property than it's probably out of bounds.
Don't trespass any further!
You have been warned. Beware!
Beyond the Freeway lies freedom.
Do you really want to go there?
It's a world we've not yet conquered,
Not controlled - do not command,
Not rid of creepy-crawlies,
Not civilized or planned,
Not disinfected, legalized, prohibited or banned,
Not ruled out the unexpected,
Nor yet come to understand,
Where the hand of man has not yet squeezed the
Life out of the land.
Chorus
