The Russian Army in the 90s was the dumping ground for all the bored young people who had no use in the trashed economy. So they send them to Chechnya to die, so Yeltsin could get the country behind him.

@Weibkoln The number of soldiers doesn't play the biggest role usually though. Having an organised network of Air, Armour and Infantry forces is more important than numbers. 1000 Royal Marine Commandos or Korps Mariniers with Armour and Air support is more effective than 5000 regularly trained troops with disorganized Air and Armour components.

@Weibkoln I mean European armies train small numbers of elite troops and give them expensive equipment. As opposed to the Russian conscript army of the 1990s.
