  • Who does he mean when he sings "We lost old Marty Robbins"? The only Marty Robbins I know died 1982.

  • @MrRazorblade999 In Marty's song "El Paso", the character dies memorably from a gunshot.

  • Bob Luman - great song! One of my favorites, also. Thanks for uploading it!

  • @MrRazorblade999 He's referring to El Paso the song...it's a pun.

  • @Gatorrock787 Twice,Actually? He also did one called "Fellina"(may have spelling wrong) that was another part of that same story(About the Woman he died for) that "El Paso" told?

  • @MrRazorblade999 He means "lost" metaphorically, as in lost him to the sad, violent songs that he's talking about. Before "El Paso", Marty sang more upbeat, happy tunes like "White Sport Coat".

  • Bob Luman, back when authenticity counted.

  • Typo - should be American Band Stand

  • I saw Bob Luman perform twice in the 1970's and I remember this song being played on American Bank Stand when I was a little kid. Bob said in one of his concerts that the problem he had was the rock people said he sounded too country and the country people said he sounded too rock.

  • @MrEdenKane yea the song is corny so they could change the lyrics to something less cornball

  • Great song never dated.

  • @spacepatrolman The song would not be the same if the Everly brothers sang it due to the lyrics.

    We lost old Marty Robbins

Down in old El Paso a little while back

And now Miss Patti Page or one of them

    Is a-wearing black

And Cath's Clown has Don and Phil

Where they feel like a-they could die

If we keep on a-losin' our singers like that

I'll be the only one you can buy'. Also not there sound.

Great taste in music though my friend

  • “When Johnny Cash left the Louisiana Hayride, Bob Luman replaced him. Bob moved to Nashville, joined the Grand Ole Opry and The Opry was never the same after that. He was very hard to follow, after bringing the Ryman audience to a frenzy. Many old timers didn't like that at all, and they didn't try to hide it. Bob ruled the Ryman for a few years, and he kept all the seats filled every Saturday night." [By Bill Morrison for the Rockabilly Hall of Fame]
