behind the scenes at a photo session at a Southern California college. We're shooting some key staff members in the foreground, with active students as an energetic backdrop. Lots of flash fill was used to light up the shades volleyball court

  • What would of been the difference if you didn't softbox the back lights but let them shot through their normal dish? Softboxs give a softer light but not from that distance.

    Thanks

  • thanx for the comment. You're right about the light quality, if the boxes are at an extreme distance....but, here, I was primarily concerned with the light on the couple up front...and since they were not that far from the boxes, it actually gave them a better look.....don

  • did you plug in those lights for power or self power with a battery pack? I seemed darker then I thought with all those lights. I guess that's the look you were going for? Or yourtube.

The lupe on the screen was cool trick but why not zoom into the picture on the camera?

    Good video

  • Yeah, I purposely had the background about a half stop under the front. And, even with the loupe I still DO zoom in on the camera's LCD....and, the loupe makes that even better and easier to see details...AND to accurately analyze the histogram.......don

  • the lighting on the couple blows.

  • I liked the video, but it would have been great to add a still of the finished product.

  • I like the concept of the group shot with softboxes, but I have to agree with one other viewer.... the lighting on the front couple seems rather flat. It's almost like they were pasted into the photo after the fact.

  • How do you meter for a shot like that? How do you know the power level on the strobes?

  • Cool I ll try that loupe trick myself since I have a bunch lying around from the film days, now I can put them back go use!

Ya I was just wondering about the back lights I thought I was missing something when I saw the softboxs up. I thought It might be more focused control or something but wanted to double check.

    Thanks

  • For those who can't afford all the flashes, wouldn't it work just to use a tripod and then make an extra exposure for the background where the building and sky isn't blown out?

Agreed that you might miss out on some of the 'punch' that a flash gives.
