Part of our culture is to tip our servers. It's just what we do...it's like saying "thank you" except in a tangible way that actually matters to servers. The only people who use the argument that "tipping is extra" and "the server is there to serve and shouldn't expect extra" are people who don't have a blessed clue about how much crap servers have to put up with every day. Get off your high horse, or (better yet) YOU work serving tables for your entire living and see how you like non-tippers.

@jabrooonni You obviously need to to experience a job in the restaurant business. I wonder what it is you're aspiring to be. When you say it's their job to do it, I'm not sure what you mean by overpaying for food. If you want to go to a place where you get free service please feel free too. Don't try to validate an argument that you clearly have limited knowledge on.

So you're saying you want to have a mcdonalds experience every time to eat? go eat fast good then. When you eat a fine dining restaurant it's understood that the server is there to help you and assist you in your food ordering. Who else is going to be there to answer your questions on what is good there?

It'd be amazing if everyone in the United States got paid like people did in Europe, where you make above minimum wage, but it's America. Try owning a restaurant.. Then we'll talk.

Cool no problem, don't show up to places that have servers. Try owning a restaurant and then get back to this argument. No one's asking for you to go places that have servers. If you don't have enough money to pay for your food then don't go out to eat, k thanks! :)

the problem I have with tipping is that 1) I would gladly get my own food and drinks if I'm allowed ... but I'm not .. it's like forcing a surcharge on me and 2) I don't see why if I get a 40 dollar entree ... I need to pay more for the service of bringing it than a 20 dollar one.

obviously i still tip between 15-20% when I dine out .. I just think it's a stupid system and that waiters should get paid a set price like everywhere else in the world.

@jabrooonni We get paid 2.13 an hour. We work for tips. It's not our bosses fault; it's the corporate structure and the way restaurants work. I don't have to do a damn thing for you. There are minimum guidelines I have to follow, and when people come in who regularly do not tip, I don't do very much for them. If you stiff me or tip shitty, it will be a while before I get to refilling your drinks or putting your order in. I'll take care of my other tables before I do anything for non-tippers.

@MonkeyCanning because waiters and waitresses at restaurants make 2.00+ per hour...they make their money from tips. Fast food pays minimum ranging from 7.50-9.00...That is why we tip. some of these people live off of this..... its the way it is in the U.S. If you can't afford to tip, then you shouldn't go out to a sit-down restaurant.
