Could anyone give me any advice on which adobe photo editing softwareI should buy. I'm a beginner who wants to learn to make smoke and stuff like that.

On Adobe Photoshop 6.0, I've been frustratingly trying to create smoke, after distorting it as a wave, there is no option under edit for "Fade Wave," nor does Ctrl+Shift+F work. I have tried many times and go immediately from creating wave to Edit, to no avail.
Any...help?
