In this tutorial I take a look at seq24, a pattern-based sequencer that's a tonne of fun to play around with. I demystify it's user interface and take you through the basics of making and playing patterns.

I forgot to mention it during the video, but this video (and the others on my channel) are licensed under a Creative Commons CC-BY-SA 3.0 license.

  • How do you start xsynth? I installed dssi and xsynth-dssi but i cant see how to start it. Its even not in the menu. Thanks for your answer.

  • @MrXdaggetx To run xsynth stand-alone like I do, you need to use the "jack-dssi-host" command, like this:

    jack-dssi-host xsynth-dssi.so

The jack-dssi-host command is in the "dssi-host-jack" package on Ubuntu and Debian, if that helps.

  • Please do, that'd be great! I've had a quick look at Loopdub, but I think it'd be great to see it in action, just to get a feel for the kinds of things you can do with it.

  • @pneumanlsd Can you use a midi controller instead of using the mouse? This looks really easy.. I just hate that I can't use audio samples in it, but seems like it would work perfect for getting the core of a beat down. Thanks for the video!

  • @emomagica If you watch part 2 you'll see how you can use your QWERTY keyboard to trigger patterns in real-time for live performance, but yes, MIDI is an option, too. The best guide I know of for setting up a MIDI controller is this page on the linuxaudio wiki -- search for seq24 there and it should come up.

  • @VectorThorn yeah, lol, i know XD

  • @VectorThorn should have watched all the way through before asking ;)

  • what music is that in the intro?!?

  • Advice from a newbie who just discovered the wonders of this great program...

-WINDOWS USERS - seq24 has a Windows version too. Substitute Jack for LoopBe1, get some soft synths/samplers, a host (Reaper?), setup...cheers.

-Do read the readme in folder where you installed it. Good 'getting started' guide (of course, pneumanlsd's tutorial is excellent as well.)

  • With out your incredible tutorial I would have never realised what an awesome tool/program seq24 is!

  • From what I've notice in these tutorial videos thus far, Seq24 might be better than LMMS.

  • @pneumanlsd

thank you very much! works great :D
